COMMERCIAL DESIGN
Design Concept: Whanau is a restaurant in South Island, New Zealand that embodies the indigenous Maori word for family. The interior’s design is focused on sustainability because the Kiwis (people from New Zealand) value environmental responsibility. Materials are locally and sustainably sourced. The charred timber wood stain and 3D printed lava rock wall pay homage to the hangi, a traditional wood burning cooking method. Another Maori-inspired design element is the honed pounamu waterfall near the host stand. According to Maori tradition, the stone symbolizes prosperity and harmony.
